On the road with Niklas Maak and Leanne Shapton: an unusual view of Manhattan Journalist Niklas Maak and artist Leanne Shapton meet at the southern tip of Manhattan. For two days, they walk a straight line to the northern tip of the island on 220th street, where nothing evokes the glamour of Broadway, Central Park or 5th Avenue.
They observe the city, letting themselves be guided by chance events: potholes, yellow taxis, brownstone façades, a Chinese electric-scrap dealer, millionaires in their Bentleys, Trump Tower. Using big and small dramas by the wayside, the pair tell New Yorkers’ stories: Niklas Maak, by taking notes, and Leanne Shapton in watercolours. Gradually, an unusual, very individual image of Manhattan emerges – our present times, like a microcosm captured on an island by the Hudson River.
