The L in Laura
When Laura, happily married, and David meet in Lisbon, they immediately know that their lives are going to change. An intricate novel about love, desire and the question of where betrayal begins.
"1:08, 1:09, 1:12. Three unread messages. All three by him. His name, three times. Meaning he had just written to her." Without reading his e-mails, Laura sends her replies to the Internet: "It's rather late. I couldn't sleep. I love you." Then she returns to the bedroom where her husband is sleeping. "I love you, too", she thought. "I never loved you as much. That is the truth."
Laura had met David three weeks earlier in Lisbon, during an international poetry symposium – she a married poetess from Austria, he a famous London writer who immediately made her feel as if they had been close for a long time. Now a relationship is unfolding that both flinch from, while at the same time knowing that they will not be able to escape it.
Das L in Laura is a suspensefully quiet novel that tells the old story of love and betrayal in manner both sensual and intricate. Its protagonists cover long distances and it is not at all clear whether they do so in order to come together or to flee each other.
"Outstanding narrative. Schlag describes the powers of desire in a language both sensual and discreet." (Karl-Markus Gauß, Neue Zürcher Zeitung)
