The Distant Sister

The Distant Sister

Ruth Rehmann

It is the late 1940s and the war has recently ended. Madeleine, a young woman, has like so many others lost everything, including her family and her homeland. Her dream of making a new start after the devastation has come to nothing – every attempt she has made to find somewhere to feel at home has ended in a fresh departure. When her love for Anton proves to be yet another dead end, Madeleine finally musters the courage to make a momentous decision: she joins a group of journalists who are the first to be allowed to travel to Algeria via Marseilles since the war ended. But here, in this unfamiliar world, it seems yet another war may be looming.
