Jonathan Schotter has lost his wife to an Argentinean poet and polo player and his prestigious job in a Zurich advertising agency to a much younger colleague. He ends up in Berlin where he roams the streets of the city as a distanced observer who no longer expects much out of life.
All this changes abruptly when he sees a young woman on the subway train who immediately intrigues him. She does not cast even a single glance in his direction but, fortunately, forgets her laptop which Jonathan takes home. Obsessed with getting to know the fascinating stranger, he undertakes endless research, cracks codes and passwords, reads her e-mails, loses himself in worlds of foreign data. The young woman whose real identity eludes him in the depths of virtual space, calls herself Roula Rouge.
Schotter manages to arrange a "chance meeting". He gives her a new laptop as a present, wins her affection and falls head over heels in love with this woman who does not fit into his world at all. He lives in constant fear of being revealed as a laptop thief and data robber but the young woman, who comes from East Germany, guards a few secrets of her own…
