Regaining One's Face

Barbara Honigmann has won critical and public acclaim with books that blend autobiography and literature into a homogeneous – and highly original – whole. This latest collection of compositions and essays, drawing on her writings and those of others, is characteristically insightful.

Here we find the story of Jeanette Schocken, a Jewish woman from a long-established Bremerhaven family who is deported, with her sick daughter, to the Minsk ghetto and murdered there. Honigmann also portrays the French writer Albert Cohen and explores the strange life of Bertha von Pappenheim, one of Sigmund Freud's most famous patients.
