Playground of Heroes
In the summer of 1983, three South Tyrolean mountaineers set an almost unbelievable record: they traversed the glaciers of Greenland’s ice sheet without sled dogs or any other outside assistance.
Köhlmeier describes the expedition as a farcical psychodrama, because right from day one there was conflict among the three climbers. Competitiveness, showdowns and one-upmanship marked the 88 days the trio spent in the inhospitable wilderness.
In the process of researching the event, Köhlmeier found himself being drawn deeper and deeper into the story. This novel, first published in 1988, is the account of a great adventure and an impressive parable of our times.
