Leading Swiss weekly magazine Die Weltwoche is currently publishing a novel by Charles Lewinsky, serialised in 50 instalments, about a football star and an illegal immigrant – and how political agitators and the tabloid press are getting maximum
Two Africans in Switzerland. One is celebrated centre-forward Tom Keita from Guinea; the other a distant cousin of his from the same village who manages to get himself smuggled into the country only promptly to materialize on Keita's doorstep. From the same beginnings, their lives have run in parallel, and yet now two entirely different outcomes emerge. Right in the thick of it are Keita's fiancée, Claudia (whose sole mission in life it is to belong to the celebrity scene), and Eidenbenz, high-ranking politico and president of Keita's football club, who has a penchant for minority politics: black footballers are good for business, and black illegals make for good political dynamite. How will the game play out? Only on November's final whistle will it become clear what problems everyone – not only politicians – can encounter when dealing with people from different cultures.
