Living with the Enemy

Living with the Enemy

Barbara Beuys

Barbara Beuys gives us a vivid, nuanced depiction of everyday life in Amsterdam during the five years of German occupation. At first, the citizens of Amsterdam do their best to preserve everything that makes their city so unique and appealing by trying to adapt to the occupying forces. But when it becomes obvious that the Jewish population is to be eradicated they can no longer contain their anger. Yet the city’s bureaucratic machinery implements the new laws in collaboration with the German police and soldiers, depriving the citizens of their rights and enforcing the disenfranchisement and deportation of the Jewish population.
