Antje Damm

Antje and Kiki have one glorious year to enjoy their friendship. A year during which the two girls are inseparable. Then Kiki dies in an accident – but she lives on in Antje’s memory.
Antje has moved out to the country with her parents and two brothers. It takes her a long time to get used to her new home; she misses the city, her friends, her old room and Fluse, the stuffed dog, which she can’t seem to find in any of the removal crates. Then she meets Kiki and the two girls soon grow close. They brew up magical potions, build castles for their Smurfs, console straying cats and search for broken pottery fragments in the nearby fields, because Kiki wants to become an archaeologist when she grows up. In next to no time, spring and summer have passed, and Antje feels as if she’s known Kiki all her life. But one November day Kiki and Antje’s story ends as abruptly as it started when Kiki is struck by a moped and dies. All that remains are wonderful memories and a small gift from Kiki that Antje hasn’t been able to bring herself to open even as an adult, because the thrill of anticipation will always outweigh the reality of the contents.
