"To a factory owner whose wife had been kidnapped at a trade fair and who had paid a substantial ransom, a woman was returned whom he did not know and had not reported missing." Thus begins one of Botho Strauß' short stories. Chance, ambiguity and the dark side of things are topics of the journal entries, fairy tales and dreams collected here. People are misidentified or switched, and they alter their appearance and identity. Just a step away from life's normal path of life, a zone of darkness and fear beckons: a region where, as in fairy tales, magical skills prove more useful than reason and logic, and where the slightest tremor can trigger an emotional catastrophe.
