In Search of a Mother
»Radiant and exuberant« – these were the words used to describe the mother in the medical records of the Amsterdam hospital where Tania was born – an ironic observation in view of what the future held. Tania is the eldest of Patricia’s three daughters, but her mother never took care of her or her younger sisters, Tamara and Iris. Tania was abandoned at the Amsterdam hospital after her grandfather tried in vain to sell her via a newspaper advertisement. Iris was handed from one relative to another and ended up in a children’s home, while Tamara was smuggled across Europe in a hold-all to her grandmother, where she nearly starved to death. The sisters grew up independently, unaware of each other’s existence. Though Tania and Tamara found homes with adoptive parents, all three of them were caught up in a constant battle to conquer the devastating pain of being unwanted – a battle fought with caustic energy and corrosive anger.
