This book deals with Canetti's SKETCHES and his anthropological masterpiece, CROWDS AND POWER. The author takes multiple approaches to the entire range of Canetti's thinking, bridging disciplines and discourses from comparative literature to philosophy, psychology and history. Penka Angelova also examines secondary literature as well as relationships to other thinkers such Le Bon and Freud who accepted the concept of the "primitive horde" while Canetti found parallel phenomena through the centuries. She finds binding categories that blur the borders between the animalistic on the one side and the divine on the other, and puts forward the thesis that, with his new concept of humanity, Canetti anticipated cultural upheavals in the Western world.
