Superintendent Laurenti's fourth case leads him once again back into Trieste's troubled political past. This time not only small-time crooks but Yugoslavian financiers and his own colleagues from the Italian Secret Service interfere with Laure

In a remote mountain valley a naked male corpse is found. The coroner's report says: death by suffocation. When the man is identified it turns out that he has had several dates with Mia, a young Australian. Mia remains in Italy to settle an estate that includes a warehouse. And she is not the only one startled to find the warehouse is filled, from floor to ceiling, with old weapons. The former owner, Diego de Henriquez, an eccentric nobleman, died many years ago under mysterious circumstances. Investigations lead to a conspiracy between the Maltese Order and the Mafia. Is there a connection between the dead man and the inheritance? But Laurenti also worries about his friend Galvano, a retired medical expert, who provides a young deaf-mute woman with mysterious documents and a great sum of money from a safe-deposit box. Both seem to attract the attention of a number of sinister characters. And as if that were not enough, his wife, his daughter and his lover grate upon Laurenti's jangled nerves. But the events leading to an explosive ending leave little room for private affairs…
