Castle Freeman is back with a modern western about rural America – for fans of Fargo and Three Billboards.
Lucian Wing, the hillbilly with the sheriff’s star, is about to receive a high-up visitor. Men in pinstriped suits and silk ties are rarely seen in this outpost in Vermont. A mouthy lawyer from New York arrives, claiming to be in search of his client’s missing daughter. And so, together with his new deputy, the tight-lipped Treat, Wing starts an investigation. But soon he wishes he’d listened to his instincts. Because big-city arrogance is something you should never trust.
“Castle Freeman always delivers. A Texan who has lived for a long time in the northeastern state of Vermont, he writes lean, clear, straightforward novels about hillbillies and supposed fools, who you’d say were wily peasants if they still worked the land.”
- Peter Koerte, FAZ, 02.08.21
“Castle Freeman has an ear for wonderful dialogues that seem close to everyday life and are still honed. I wouldn’t be surprised if this book was made into a film. When you read it, the images on the big screen already start running through your head.”
- Stefan Keim, WDR4 Buchtipp, 17.08.21
“You wish you were part of it all. Then you would find yourself in the care of comforting people who, even in the most difficult times, don’t lose their cool.”
- Peter Henning, Aargauer Zeitung, 21.08.21
The wonderful thing about Castle Freeman’s stories set in rural parts is the dryness with which they are written. His writing is sparse but every word is carefully chosen. And it’s really funny because it’s witty, not slapstick. His punchlines land.
