Happiness and work are two very different things. Trixi and Walter have been married for many years. Walter spends his days sitting in an advertising agency while Trixi dreams of making documentary films for television. Her current project is a portrait of Richard Lindner, but what commissioning editor is going to be interested in a forgotten painter? Walter resents Trixi for wallowing in her own luxurious fantasy world, leaving him to cope with the vagaries of daily life as well as the burden of the economic crisis single-handed. The whole world has turned into a circus, but no one seems to have noticed except for him! How is he going to manage to get through to art-fixated Trixi that we’re all going to hell in a handcart? With everything going wrong in the world outside, Trixi no longer seems to understand Walter. In the end he is haunted by nocturnal visions of himself as a sad, disconnected clown. But how does everyone else see him? It all comes to a head one day when he finds an advertisement for clown’s paraphernalia in his post box...
