Paulus Hochgatterer

At first glance the protagonists of this novel may seem unremarkable: they have taken their places in society, work in respectable jobs, and apparently live well-ordered lives. Closer examination, however, tells another story: we become witnesses to a slow but steady drifting away from traditional roles, of a gradual leave-taking from familiar standards of behaviour.

There is the surgeon who starts directing his own, absurd, bloody dramas; the writer who withdraws purposefully to an autoerotic voyeurist's point of view; the psychoanalyst who confuses her patients with bizarre behaviour. And the little boy who seems so suspiciously other-worldly…

In short, Paulus Hochgatterer's characters are losing their minds and crossing borders that seem attractively close. In a literary tour de force, with subtle doses of humour, Hochgatterer leads us to the fringes of our world: observed from its fringes, is it now out of reach – or much easier to comprehend?

"Hochgatterer's books stand out for their unique and highly original combination of powerful imagery and analytic, almost vivisectory perception." (Franz Schuh)
