A Door Concealed

Marlen Haushofer

Ignored for many years, then showered with prizes, almost forgotten after her death: the work of Marlen Haushofer, who died in 1970 and ranks among Austria's most important writers, reflects the concerns of a literary life. Yearning for the more liberal atmosphere of the city, suffering from lack of respect for her work in the provinces, she continued to live with her husband and two sons in a small town in Upper Austria.

Her novel, Die Tapetentür, first published in 1957, deals with the disturbing life story of thirty-year-old Annette, with love and sadness, loneliness and the acceptance of pain. A sinister, albeit subconscious, knowledge radiates from every line of this fascinating work.
