Peter Gradenwitz, born 1910 in Berlin, studied musicology, history of literature and philosophy in Freiburg and Berlin as well as composition with Julius Weismann, Josef Rufer and Hanns Eisler. Since 1936 he has lived in Tel Aviv where he co-founded the IGNM section and founded the first Israeli music publishing company. He has been a guest professor at several universities. His most important publications include, Musikgeschichte Israels (History of Music in Israel, 1961), Johann Stamitz. Leben, Umwelt, Werke (Johann Stamitz. His Life and Works, 1985), and the biography of Leonard Bernstein (4th edition 1995).
