Ioan Holender, born in 1935 in Timis¸oara, Romania, he grew up speaking three languages. His father owned a factory producing vinegar and jam, which was expropriated by the state in 1948. Holender was expelled from university in 1956 for political reasons, and emigrated to Vienna in 1959 where he worked as an opera singer and from 1966 to 1988 as an opera agent– the beginning of his long-standing association with the Vienna State Opera.
