Emilia Smechowski born in Poland in 1983, fled with her family to West Berlin in 1988. She studied opera singing and Romance Languages in Berlin and Rome until she became a journalist. She has been a reporter at the taz daily newspaper and now works as a freelance writer and reporter, among others for Geo magazine, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit. Her essay on Invisible Poles was awarded the German Reporter Prize, the Konrad Duden Journalist Prize and the German-Polish Tadeusz Mazowiecki Journalist Prize. On Twitter: @emilia_owski
