Emilia Smechowski, born 1983 in Poland, fled with her family to West Berlin in 1988. She works as a freelance author and reporter for Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit, among others. She has received many awards for her reportage, including the German Reporter Award. In 2017 she published Wir Strebermigranten. After a year in Gdansk, she now lives in Berlin again.
