Drago Jancar was born in 1948 in Maribor, Slovenia, and ranks as the most important Slovenian writer. In 1974 he was imprisoned on charges of enemy propaganda. His novels, essays and plays have been translated into English, German, Russian and Polish. In 1994 Drago Jancar received the European Award for Short Fiction.
