Dirk Schümer was born in 1962 in Soest, and studied German language and literature, philosophy and medieval history in Hamburg and Paris. In the early 1990s, he worked as an editor and cultural correspondent for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Venice and Vienna, and has worked in the same roles for the Welt Group since November 2014.
