"Whatever next!" snaps Mother Gertrude irritably when Katherine wants to spend her holidays in the country air of Uncle John's farm. But her daughter's exhaustive pleading and exaggerated wheezing finally makes her give in. As soon as Katherine has boarded the train, the adventure begins: She meets Rosy who claims to understand the language of animals. Instead of saying »Whatever next!«, Katherine listens intently until she can understand the dog Gustavo, another passenger on the train. On Uncle John's farm, she converses fluently with all the animals, learning that Erwin, the donkey, would sooner be called Igor, and that the nameless dog suffers from rheumatism. At the end of the holidays, it's not only the animals who feel better: the family, too, is drawing closer as everybody tries to listen more attentively and to talk to each other. It's a fact even mother Gertrude cannot deny.
