Now, at the age of 90, he takes a look back, and glorification and nostalgia are not to be expected. As one of the leading protagonists of Austrian economic politics, Treichl was at the centre of many important decisions, sometimes an opponent of powers in charge, never their agent. For him, liberalism meant more than just letting markets rule themselves. Treichl tells of his parent's salon visited by the cream of society, his grandmother who was one of Sigmund Freud's first patients, inner conflicts during the war, his brother who was killed fighting for the resistance, and, as an unbiased observer, of his encounters with famous politicians.
