Hugh Pine lives in a large pine tree with a splendid view of Rotworth Bay. With his friends, Mister McTosh, the post office manager, the fox, the eagles and the seals, Hugh has had many adventures. They call him the "wise old animal" because of his courage and good ideas – and Hugh is mightily proud of that.

Then one day Mr. Bucks and his dog Wuffo turn up in Rotworth. Overwhelmed by the sight of so much unused landscape, Mr. Bucks starts working on a development plan. Of course that is something that Hugh and his friends want to prevent at all costs.

During a boat trip, Mr. Bucks and his beloved Wuffo go overboard. While the fat Mr. Bucks is rescued by Mister McTosh, Bellow is stranded on an island and can't get back. Without Wuffo, Mr. Buck's life is sad and miserable – and Hugh scents an opportunity: How about a deal with Mr. Bucks? Hugh brings Wuffo back, and Mr. Bucks, in turn, won't build his factories.
